Chapter One

The room was dark and smoky. The music was pumped up loud as the bodies
moved to the beat on the floor.
A trio of gentleman sat at the bar, relaxing after a very triumphant
evening.
"Ohhh....check that one out mate." said Simon as he elbowed John in the
ribs.
"Nah....she's more your speed, Charley."
This made the third member of the trio almost snort his drink out his
nose.He regained his composure and merely chuckled at his two oldest
friends.
At that moment Nick noticed a woman sit down at the other end of the
bar.
"Attractive....but not my type." he thought to himself. Simon noticed
the direction of Nicks glance and looked for himself.
"Ooh la la....what do we have here?" Simon purred as he walked over to
stand beside his younger friend.
"She is rather attractive." John offered as he joined the conversation.
"Why don't you go over to introduce yourself?" he added.
"If he doesn't I will." Simon piped up.
"She's not really my type." Nick quipped
"Beggars can't be choosers.....now go!" Ordered John as he gave his
friend a not so gentle nudge off his stool.
Nick turned around and gave him a look that John knew very well..then
proceeded to the other side of the bar.
He stepped up beside the woman and said
"Hi....I'm Nick. Care if I join you?"
The woman looked at him for a moment trying to see if she could read his
motive.
"Suit yourself......I am Olivia."
"Nice to meet you Olivia"
Nick smiled at Olivia as he took the seat next to her.
"Can I buy you a drink?" he asked.
"No" she replied, "I can buy my own drink."
"Oh" he said, as the bartender approached and took their drink orders.
"Just thought I'd ask."
"Thank you for asking, but it's not necessary." she replied
"Well Olivia" he began, "what brings you in here tonight?"
"I'm just relaxing after a long day."
"May I ask what you do?"
"If you must know, I'm a junior partner for a large law firm." she said
in an irritated tone.
"That sounds quite interesting." he said.
"Yeah, I guess it is sometimes." she replied before taking a long sip of
her drink.
Nick glanced at John and Simon, they were smiling and laughing
hysterically. He shot them a look. "Those bastards" he thought, "they
got me into this."
He'd never struggled so hard to strike up a conversation, or to keep one
going. Why now? He gave Olivia a warm smile, he was determined
to get her talking.
Nicks mind raced for something to talk about, anything. Finally he asked
"Which law firm is it you wok for? Maybe I've heard of them."
Olivia took a drink and gave him a look of disbelief "Adkins,Greene,
Kello and Associates"
"Ah...yes...that's the second largest firm in the city, isn't it?"
Olivia was stunned. "Yes...it is. Only Durham and Chappell is larger."
Nick smiled. "I guess it pays to know these things" he thought to
himself as he noticed for the first time just how attractive she really
was. Shoulder length brown hair, hazel eyes, flawless skin.....Nicks mind
wandered til Olivias question brought him out of his reverie.
"So, what do you do for a living, Nick?" inquired Olivia.
"Um..I am a musician."
"That's nice.anything I've heard of?"

"Possibly" he said teasingly.
"Are you an independent musician, or are you in a band?" "I'm in a band." he replied.
"Is your band popular?"
"Um..yeah, you could say we're popular." "Ah...I see" she began, "tell me some of your songs, maybe I've heard them."
"Hmmm, we've released a lot of songs and many albums." "Tell me some of the big ones then."
"Alright" he began, "There was an album called Rio. That was a big one and Seven and the Ragged Tiger, also another big one. We released many songs from those."
"Oh wait.....that's that band with the funny name.....Duran
Duran...right?"
"Um...yes, that would be us." he replied with a smile. Nick noticed Olivia shift her weight on the stool. "Thank God." Nick thought to himself. "She finally loosened up." But instead of moving in closer Olivia put a tip on the counter and got up to walk away.
Alarms went off in Nicks head. She was leaving! He didn't know if he should try to stop her or just let her go.He looked up and met the riveted gaze of his band mates. Their eyes were glued to Nick and his every movement. If he let her walk away he would never live it down. They would make sure of that.
Nick reached out and grabbed the arm of her suit jacket. "Why are you leaving?" he asked
Olivia gave him a wary look.
"I am not a fan of yours.......that's why. I am tired,my mind is half melted and I have better things to do than sit and be hit on by a man looking for a groupie for the evening."
"It's not like that at all...." Nick defended "Isn't it?" she asked. "I thought all musicians wanted that." "No" he replied, sounding a little irritated. "Olivia, have I hit on you or made one move on you?"
"Well, no" she replied. "But you approached me." "Yes, I did, and we chatted, but that's not hitting on you. Nor is it asking you to spend an evening with me." "Well,I guess that is true enough." Olivia conceded. "If you would be more comfortable someplace else I would be happy to accompany you. No strings attached." Nick offered...always the gentleman.
"Where on earth would we go?" she asked. "Anywhere you want. I'm going to leave that up to you." he said with a smile.
Olivia thought for a few moments.
"Well" she began, "it is sort of loud in here. I suppose we could go somewhere that's quiet.
"Just name the palce and we'll go." he said. "There's a quiet lounge/bar around the corner." she offered. "I think that would be fine. I'm ready when you are." Nick laid his money on the counter and he and Olivia made their way to the door.
John gave a sly smile as he and Simon watched their friend leave with the woman they'd pushed him to meet. "Wonder where they're off to?" John questioned. "I'll bet I can guess." Simon chuckled.
John's drink almost shot out of his nose as he laughed. "LeBon, you're so not right!" John said once he regained his composure. Nick and Olivia entered the nearby lounge she'd told him about. It was dimly lit, but much quieter and fewer people. They took a table and ordered a couple of drinks. "This time" Nick began, "please let me pay for your drink. Remember, no strings attached."
"So,tell me about yourself." Nick said as he took a sip of his drink "Ah....nothing too exciting."Olivia smiled. "Born and raised in the Mid West, Catholic School Education, College, Law School.....that's about it."
Nick furrowed his eyebrows "Oh come now..there has to be more to you than just your education. What do you like to do?" "Well......I have always loved art and music, but, rarely had tme for that...Dad was always on us about our school work. I love to travel. But with my schedule....."
"Wow.sounds like you could use a holiday!" For the first time all evening Olivia let out a real laugh "Um...yeah I guess you could say that, Nick."
Nick and Olivia talked awhile longer til she noticed the time. "I hate to have to go but I have a case in court at 9 in the morning." Olivia stated looking at her watch. "It was nice meeting you though Nick. Sorry I was such a bitch at first." "That is quite alright. The pleasure was mine. I will be in town for a few more days. Would you perhaps go with me to dinner tomorrow night?" Olivia smiled "That would be lovely Nick. Here is my business card with all the numbers to reach me. Just call me tomorrow to set the time."

Nick smiled and took her card.
"I will." he purred.
He escorted Olivia out and hailed a cab for her. He smiled as he
watched the cab drive away. He placed her business card in his pocket
as he walked back to the club where John and Simon were.
Nick approached the duo, still smiling.
"Back so soon?" Simon asked as Nick took a seat.
"Whatever do you mean?" asked Nick.
"We saw you leave with that pretty girl." John conceded.
"Oh." Nick responded, nonchalantly.
"C'mon Nick, don't be so coy." John quipped.
"Yeah, we want details!" Simon exclaimed.
"Details? What details?"
"Don't pay any attention to LeBon, he's a little hyper right now."
"I sort of noticed that."
"Well," John began, "Does your lovely have a name?"
"Ummm....she's not mine, but she does have a name." Nick replied.
"It's Olivia."
"Ah, Olivia. She's a lovely bird." John mused.
"Yes, yes she is. Very smart too."
"Smart?" John asked.
"Yeah, she's a junior partner for the second largest law firm in the
city."
"Wow. So where did you two run off to?"
"Oh," Nick began. "we walked to a lounge around the corner. Fewer
people, less noise."
"Where is she now?" asked John.
"She had to go home. She has a case and has to be at court early in the
morning."
"Oh, I see."
"But, we're going out for dinner tomorrow evening." Nick said with a
smile.
"Good job, old boy!" John chuckled as he slapped Nick on the shoulder.
Nick and John looked around, then at each other.
"Now, where the hell did Simon go?" Nick asked.
Nick excused himself and went up to his room. He took
Olivia's card out and placed it next to the phone. He turned out
the light and fell asleep with thoughts of Olivia on his mind.
He awoke around 11:00am, full of excitement. He
immediately picked up Olivia's card and called her office. The phone
rang several times.
"Damn, she's probably still in court." he thought to himself.
He was about to hang up when he heard "Good Morning.Adkins,Greene,
Kello and Associates.Olivia Montgomery's office. This is Lynn speaking.
How may I help you?"
"Ah yes, good morning. My name is Nick Rhodes and I was calling to speak
with Ms. Montgomery."
"Hold on one moment please, sir."
Nick was put on hold for a few moments before he heard the voice he had
been longing to hear all morning on the other end.
"Hello. Olivia Montgomery."
"Morning Ms. Montgomery."Nick purred
"Hello to you to Mr. Rhodes."
Nick could hear the smile in her voice.
"Well..I am sure you can guess as to why I am calling."
"Hmm....wouldn't have anything to do with a certain dinner date would
it?"
"It could ....yes." Nick laughed.
"Well....you are lucky you caught me. I should have been in court, but
the judge was sick and there was no last minute replacement available.
So we got postponed til Monday. I was just sitting here going over some
briefs that I am way behind on. But I am sure you didn't want to hear
all that." Olivia chuckled.
"No I find what you do rather interesting. But about that dinner date."
"Ah yes, our dinner date."
"When will you be leaving the office?"
"I'll be out of here by 5:00pm."
"Is there a certain time I should pick you up?"
"Hmmm....I'll leave here at 5:00, get home by 5:30 and freshen up a bit. I think 7:00 would be a good time."
"O.K., 7:00 it is then."
Olivia gave Nick her address and the directions and chatted for a few more minutes.
"Well," Olivia began, "I suppose I'd better get back to those briefs so I can get out of here by 5:00."
"I look very forward to seeing you this evening, Olivia."
"Me too, Nick."
"Bye Ms. Montgomery." he chuckled.
"Bye Mr. Rhodes." She replied with a laugh.
Nick placed the handset back on the cradle of the phone. He had a big smile on his face. He glanced at his watch, "It's only 11:30am." he mumbled. He longed for time to speed up so he could see Olivia again. He'd become lost in his thoughts and hadn't heard the knocking on the door. He was startled back into reality by very loud pounding on his door.
"What the hell is going on out there?" he asked as he walked to the door.
He found John and Simon standing on the other side.
"I should've known." he said sarcastically.
"What does that mean?" Simon questioned.
"He just means he knew we'd be the one's pounding on the door." John defended. "Chill-out, LeBon."
"Yeah, what he said." Nick chuckled.
"So," John began, "do you want to join us for lunch?"
"Ummm....actually, I think I'll pass. I have a lot to do today."
"What've you got going on today mate?" John questioned.
"Well, I spoke to Olivia this morning and I'm picking her up at 7:00 for dinner."
"Nick, it's only 12:00pm right now. 7:00 is 7 hours away."
"I know, but I have to find a great restaurant and make reservations. Just a million things to do."
"Well" John began, "we'll be downstairs if you want to join us."
"O.K." Nick said as John and Simon boarded the elevator.
Nick closed the door and picked up the phone book on his way to the sofa. He thumbed through it, looking for the perfect place to take Olivia. He searched for a long while before he found one that caught his attention. He called them and made reservations for 8:00, so there wouldn't be a rush to get there once he picked Olivia up. He smiled as he hung up the phone.
"OK" he began, "that's done." he said to himself.
He continued his conversation with himself.
"Lescher's is supposed to be great. Now who told me their chef was the best?"
"Damn!" he grumbled as he glanced at his watch. "It's only 2:00!"
He went about getting other things taken care of for their evening. Finally, it was time to get Olivia.
He rang her doorbell and stared in amazement when she opened the door.
"You're breath taking." he said with a smile.
"Thank you." she replied, blushing.
"These are for you, Olivia." he said as he gave her the boquet of fresh
calla lillies.
"Oh Nick!" she exclaimed. "How did you know calla lillies are my favourite?"
"Umm..I called your secretary and asked her what type of flowers you like."
"Thank you." she said with a smile.
"You're very welcome, Olivia." he purred.
"Shall we go?" he said as he offered his arm to her.
